Freedom of expression and its civil-law consequences

On 25 October 2019, a meeting on “Freedom of Expression and Its Civil-Law Consequences” was held at the Courtyard Marriott, jointly organised by Georgian Lawyers for Independent Profession, the Legal Profession Development Centre and the High School of Justice of Georgia.
The meeting addressed the following topics:
- A lawyer’s freedom of expression in the case law of the Strasbourg Court and the Supreme Court of Georgia — Nino Bakakuri, a judge of the Civil Affairs Chamber of the Supreme Court of Georgia;
- Defamation from Georgian and European perspectives — Ketevan Meskhishvili, a judge of the Civil Affairs Chamber of the Tbilisi Court of Appeal;
- The test for assessing whether a restriction on freedom of expression is justified — Tamar Lakerbaia, a judge of the Civil Affairs Panel of the Tbilisi City Court;
- Freedom of expression and professional ethical duties during legal proceedings — Ekaterine Gasitashvili, a judge of the Civil Affairs Chamber of the Supreme Court of Georgia.
Participants included advocates, practising lawyers and representatives of the judiciary.
